Milken Institute School of Public Health Dissertation Research Award
Eligibility: Doctoral candidates (DrPH or PhD) currently enrolled in the Milken Institute SPH who have successfully completed their comprehensive exams may apply for funds from the SPH Office of Research Excellence (ORE) in support of their dissertation research. Doctoral candidates must submit a brief application located on GWSPH The Source summarizing the primary aims and research questions, hypotheses, proposed methodology, strengths and limitations, and a proposed timeline. Each application must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation/support from the student’s dissertation committee chair. Note: You will need your GWID and password to access The Source.
Use of funds: Funds may be used to support dissertation-related travel (e.g., data collection, site visits, conference attendance to present posters, meetings with collaborators), pilot data collection or purchase of other critical datasets, purchase of specialized equipment, and publication fees, among other research-related needs not covered by other sources.
Application Deadlines: Application submissions will be accepted twice a year (fall and spring semesters); the deadlines are December 1 and May 1 for award consideration in the following semester. If an application deadline falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the deadline will be the following Monday. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. (ET) on the posted due date—all required materials must be received by this time.
Upcoming Deadlines for 2016-2017 Academic Year:
- Application due no later than December 1, 2016 for consideration Spring 2017 semester
- Application due no later than May 1, 2017 for consideration Fall 2017 semester
Awards: Currently, four awards per year will be granted (two per semester), up to $3,000/per award. Funds will be set annually based on the Office of Research Excellence’s (ORE) operating budget. Individuals may receive only one award within a 12-month period. Members of the SPH Research Committee and the Associate Dean for Research will serve as the selection committee. Each application will have no less than three reviewers. Decisions will be announced by first week of fall classes or spring classes, following the deadline. For example, students who apply to the spring deadline will receive notification by the start of the following fall semester. If there are urgent circumstances under which these deadlines/timelines are prohibitive, student should explain such circumstances in their application.
Notification of decisions will be sent to applicants from the Associate Dean of Research (or representative) via email to the awardee and his/her dissertation chair. Award spending information and requirements will be included in the notification. Students who do not receive awards also will be notified at the same time.
- Application Requirements:
A completed Dissertation Research Application must be submitted and contains the following:
- Completed Application Form, available here . The Application should include a one-page, single-spaced Project Description (Font = 11 or 12 point with margins = 1 inch). All figures and references are not included in the one-page limit.
Your Project Description on page 2 of the Application should be written for a general audience using non-technical language whenever possible in order to be understandable by research faculty in other fields. Your Project Description should address the following: summary of the primary aims and research questions, hypotheses, proposed methodology, strengths and limitations, and a proposed timeline.

- Submission Requirements:
Submit required forms and components in one PDF via email to GWSPHResearch@gwu.edu. Use the following format for the file name, using the applicant’s name, and date of submission: Lastname_Firstname_Application_Dissertation_Research_Award_Date of Submission
- Final Report:
Awardees will be required to submit a one-page Final Report within six months of the award date or before graduation (whichever comes first) outlining the expenditures made and the award’s contribution to the student’s dissertation research and progression in the program. Unspent dollars will remain with the SPH.

Flexible Research Development Awards
The Milken Institute SPH Office of Research Excellence will offer small, limited funds whereby Milken Institute SPH full-time regular faculty, full-time specialized faculty hired on the research track, full-time research scientists, and post docs can request support of up to $1,500 annually. Funds may be used to support research-related travel (e.g., conference attendance to present posters, meetings with collaborators), pilot data, purchase of specialized equipment, and publication fees, among other research-related needs not covered by other sources.
Requests may be submitted any time and there are no application deadlines. However, funds will be set annually based on the Office of Research Excellence’s operating budget and awards will be based on a “first come, first served basis” up to that limit. Individuals may receive one award within a 12-month period. The Associate Dean of Research and, as needed, the SPH Research Committee will review the requests. Notifications of decisions will be sent by the Associate Dean of Research (or representative) via email to the requestorwithin 2 weeks of the request.

The Milken Institute School of Public Health (SPH) Office of Research Excellence is committed to providing principal investigators with tools to develop the most competitive and compelling research proposals. Mentor Match is a service offered by the Dean’s Office of Research Excellence to support a mentoring process with an expert in the PI’s field of research.
Mentor Match is designed for investigators to partner with an expert in his or her field for the purpose of having a critical scientific review. This preliminary critique can be instrumental in the development of the proposed project. Ideally, the process will evolve into a collaborative research relationship between the PI and the mentor.
In the best case scenario, PIs should initiate the Mentor Match process 2-3 months prior to a grant submission deadline. The first step is to identify possible mentors. Mentors should be experts in the field of study and have a history of successful grantsmanship. Experience with the targeted funding agency is ideal. Getting an early start allows time to draft the proposal ideas, engage the mentor, receive the mentor’s critique, and incorporate the mentor’s comments into a final research proposal. Recipients of this service have benefited from successful proposals and on-going collaborations with the mentors.
How Do I Get Started?
- If you are interested in the Mentor Match service, please send your request via email to the Associate Dean of Research Kimberly Horn, and cc: firstname.lastname@example.org. Please include in your correspondence:
- the funding sponsor
- type of proposal mechanism (if available)
- link to the funding announcement
- sponsor deadline
- names of 2 potential mentors to be explored
- Retain the Associate Dean of Research’s approval email (this is required documentation to pay the mentor’s honorarium).
- Identify and confirm participation from your mentor of choice via email.
- The Office of Research Excellence will provide the PI with review tools and guidelines.
- Provide your mentor with the proposal draft and review tools approximately 4 weeks in advance of your deadline.
- Approved mentors will be paid an honorarium of $500 upon completion. The mentor will be expected to review the PIs research proposal, such as the Specific Aims and Research Strategy and related documents (Project Summary, Project Narrative). When the mentor completes the review, the PI will receive an NIH-type critique with rankings along with a conference call(s) to discuss the review.
- Ideally, reviews should be provided to the PI 3-4 weeks prior to the deadline.
- PIs schedule a follow up conference call(s) with the mentor to receive additional feedback.
- Send Dean Horn’s approval message and a copy of the completed review to email@example.com to initiate the payment process.
- The Office of Research Excellence will work with your mentor to provide the honoraria payments.

In 2014, Milken Institute School of Public Health launched the Springboard Grants Program with the goal of rapidly growing the research success of our faculty through competitive, externally funded grants. The Springboard Grants Program will include a variety of internal funding mechanisms facilitating a diverse portfolio of research.
The Office of Research Excellence announced its inaugural Springboard Grants Program mechanism, Pathways to NIH Funding in the spring of 2014.
The Bolster Funding Opportunity has been developed to give potential awardees funds to carry out preliminary studies pertinent to reviewer recommendations for a revised R01 or R01-equivalent resubmission to a federal or other funding agencies. The sponsor must allow GW’s fully negotiated federal indirect recovery (IDC) rates. The goal of this award is to bolster the competitiveness of the resubmission.
Eligibility: Individuals in the Milken Institute SPH who are eligible to submit proposals as PIs.
Funding and Project Duration: Funding up to $30,000 is available and project durations may last up to one year.
Submission Deadlines: Bolster grant applications will be accepted twice a year, on March 15th and September 15th annually. If dates fall on Saturday or Sunday, the due date will be the following Monday. Applications will be reviewed within one month after submission and awards made reasonably thereafter.
Allowable expenses: Expenses may include supplies for data collection and analysis, laboratory reagents, reasonable travel expenses essential to achieving project aims or to present pilot study data at scientific meetings, equipment, research support staff, Graduate Research Assistants, and publication costs.

Presently Closed: The Springboard Pathways RFA is focused specifically on developing grantsmanship in pursuit of NIH R21 and R01 funding. Full-time active status faculty in the Milken Institute SPH are eligible to apply; this includes regular and research track faculty at the rank of assistant, associate and full professor.
