Update on R15 Eligbility

Dear Colleagues,
Many of you have asked about the status of our School’s eligibility for AREA R15 grants. We have now confirmed with our Office of the Vice President of Research (OVPR) that only NIH funding is considered toward AREA R15 eligibility, which means that SPHHS  will be eligible to apply for AREA R15 awards through at least April of 2016. The first period of time that SPHHS has exceeded $6M cut-off is April 2012- March 2013. Because R15 eligibility is calculated every April the first point in time that we expect SPHHS to become ineligible will be during the April 2016 determination of eligibility.  This information was confirmed with Matt Portnoy, Director of the Division of Special Programs within the Office of Extramural Programs at NIH, who oversees extramural programs for R15s for all of NIH.
For those of you interested in R15 mechanisms, please refer to the following link: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/area.htm. Tina Campbell in OVPR is extremely helpful in the application process.
Also, please refer back to my blog post (under Musings) on October 24, 2012 describing how to prepare for the R15.
Best of luck,
Kimberly
