This Month in Epi Bio: DC Center for AIDS Research Fights the HIV
In 2015, a significant step was taken in the fight against HIV/AIDS in DC with the establishment of the District of Columbia Center for AIDS Research (DC CFAR), made possible by a National Institutes of Health grant that will pay out an expected $7.5 million over five years. “With this award from the National Institutes of Health, the District of Columbia and the DC Center for AIDS Research arrive as a premier destination for HIV research in the country,” said DC Mayor Muriel Bowser.
DC-CFAR and MoreWhat is Epidemiology and Biostatistics?
Epidemiology explores how diseases affect populations and communities and allows us to understand the social and medical determinants of health. Biostatistics provides us with the methods of measurement that are needed to assess the impact of disease and health programs on populations and communities. After graduating from our programs, students from our department are prepared to conduct epidemiologic research, undertake evaluation studies and monitor population health status in academic, government, private sector and community health settings. Our research helps drive understanding of how infectious diseases, like Ebola or HIV/AIDS, spread and which communities are most vulnerable so we can better treat and prevent future outbreaks.
